California Statewide Gold Coast Census Caravan begins in San Diego, on Sept. 20

San Diego, CA: Census 2020 is coming to a close and the San Diego Filipino and Asian Pacific Islander partners are making a major push to ensure an accurate and complete count before the September 30th deadline. In partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau, the CA Census Complete Count Committee and partners of the Count Me 2020 Coalition that is facilitated by the United of San Diego and Imperial Counties a full schedule of events and activities are taking place in the hardest to count neighborhoods.

The Asian Pacific Islander Initiative in collaboration with community partner Samahan Health Centers has been outreaching with Census Mobile Questionnaire Assistance (MQA) staff at all San Diego Seafood City Supermarkets since late July. First starting at the Seafood City in National City then expanding out to Mira Mesa and Chula Vista. MQA's and Census outreach in front of API Supermarkets have proven to produce hundreds of participants in the decennial Census that otherwise may not have answered the nine question survey.

In addition, Seafood City outreach has been conducted at the Vien Dong and World Market in City Heights and Zion Supermarket in Clairemont.

Lorna DeLos Santos, Community Outreach Coordinator, Samahan Health Centers "It is very important that we all participate in the Census. This brings federal resources so that we can provide quality health care programs and services in National City, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Penasquitos. We have expanded services in a number of locations since our original clinic opened in the 1970s in National City due to the growth of the Filipino community, The growth of our community is proven by the Census population count. Billions of dollars are at stake for our community in other programs like Access to Capital for small businesses, building hospitals and roads. Let's make sure we get our fair share of resources over the next 10 years!"

JoAnn Fields, Government and Public Relations Director, API Initiative and Census 2020 Coordinator, " We are in the 4th quarter and we need all hands on deck to complete the Census! If you have completed your Census, thank you for doing so. Now we need you to make sure the elders in your family and all of your relatives are  counted. Utilize the technology that is on our side. We did not have access to this conveniences in the previous decennial Census. Utilize the Census website and direct everyone you know to complete their online at www.my2020census.gov.”

JoAnn along with members of the California Filipino Census Complete Count Committee is coordinating a CA Gold Coast Census Caravan that will begin on Sunday, September 20th in San Diego to the Bay Area. "We will stop in communities that have a high concentration of Filipino and API neighborhoods to make them aware of getting out the count before the September 30th deadline. We are ambitious and confident we will make a great impact in Census 2020! It is possible when we work together!"

Accompanying the send off for the statewide caravan is Assemblymember Todd Gloria. Assemblymember Gloria is the first Filipino to be elected from San Diego and only the second Filipino in the state of California. He will lead the group of Census warriors on Sunday, September 20, 10am-12pm at Bayview Baptist Church located at  6126 Pastor Timothy Winters Street, San Diego, CA 92114.  Following San Diego they will make a stop in Orange County to meet with Arnel Dino, Commissioner, City of Fullerton before heading to Carson, Cerritos and Artesia where they will link with Census Partnership Specialists Eric Lachchica and Ivy Dulao for a tour of the Los Angeles community landmarks and meet and greet with Complete Count Committee partners including the  Pilipino Workers Center also known as Larry Itliong Village.

Former Mayor of Cerritos Mark Pulido and City of Artesia Councilmember Melissa Ramosa will meet the caravan and discuss in a livestream interview the impact that the Census has made in their respective cities and what resources are projected to be planned for the community in the ten years. City Councilmember Juslyn Manalo will also greet the Gold Coast Census Caravan in Daly City and provide a stopover at City Hall before they head to San Francisco, Alameda, Oakland, Hayward, Union City and Stockton.

The CA Gold Coast Census Caravan is self funded and welcomes donations for gas and other travel expenses. If you are interested in donating or have questions, JoAnn Fields, CA Gold Coast Census Caravan Coordinator can be reached via email at JoAnn@imaginemediagroup.com or phone (619) 884-9886 cell.
